Jacob Trouba has requested a trade…

It may be news to us, but I can guarantee that Jacob Trouba wanting to get out of Winnipeg, is not news to Winnipeg Jets management. Especially when Trouba’s agent said talks haven’t gone anywhere for “several months”, and since May a trade has been trying to get done.

In a statement, this is what Jacob Trouba’s agent has to say about Jacob Trouba wanting out of Winnipeg:

“Our client, Jacob Trouba, will not be attending the Winnipeg Jets NHL training camp. Since May, we have been working with the Jets management in an effort to facilitate a trade of Jacob’s rights. Both parties continue to work on this matter.

There has been no negotiation regarding the terms of a contract between our client and the Jets over the course of the last several months. The situation is not about money; it is solely about our client having the opportunity to realize his potential as a right shot NHL defenseman.

To the Jets credit, the club has two outstanding right shot veteran defensemen and our client simply wants the opportunity to have a greater role. As a consequence of the Jets depth on the right side, we believe it is in both parties’ best interest to facilitate a mutually advantageous trade.

Our client has nothing but respect for the people and City of Winnipeg, the Winnipeg Jets, its fans, management and ownership – our desire to get him moved has everything to do with opportunity. We will continue to work with the Jets in good faith to achieve this end.”

How can we decipher this?

In terms of Trouba not attending training camp, it might be unlikely. Although we have seen one notable player in the last few seasons (Jonathan Drouin) actually sit out of playing action due to unhappiness with the franchise, it’s still unlikely. It’s most likely a threat to get a trade done fast, or the potential of them having their third best defenseman sitting out.

It’s very likely comments about no contract negotiations in the last several months are true. The Jets knew what Jacob wanted, and vice-versa. In terms about this not being about money, that is a definite lie. Sure Trouba wants to become that right-handed defenseman he’s talking about, but if money wasn’t an issue, either side would’ve given in on terms of playing time by now.

More from Jets White Out

Like the Drouin situation in Tampa Bay, they weren’t pleased to move him just because of a stacked depth chart, so they waited for a hole to open for him. Jacob’s party needs to realize how difficult trades are to maneuver these days, and if Jacob isn’t ahead of someone on the Jets depth chart, he just has to work his way past them.

So will anything actually happen?

If Jacob Trouba is actually never going to put a Jets jersey back on his back, the Jets will be forced to make a move now. Edmonton has always been a top option, and we can guarantee there will be lots of trade talk soon.

More to come…
