Winnipeg Jets: Jacob Trouba Situation Intensifying
Whether the Winnipeg Jets like it or not, Jacob Trouba doesn’t want to be in Winnipeg. Whether his agent’s reasoning is the reality or not, they have to make a move.
Jacob Trouba’s agent has continued to preach throughout the week that his player could care less about money, but needs to be in an environment where he can succeed as a “right-shot defenseman”.
Has this forced the Jets to trade him?
That’s a tough question to answer. Although Trouba wants a trade, the Jets don’t. They will try to wait out his emotions if they can, but if they can’t, a trade might be imminent.
Here’s the top options:
Detroit Red Wings –
It was just reported by Darren Dreger that the Red Wings offered a trade involving Trouba during the summer. It involved two of the Red Wings best forwards, and potentially a draft pick as well. The Jets weren’t willing to make this trade because in return for Trouba, they’re adamant on recieving a left-handed defenseman, the same caliber as Trouba. Danny DeKeyser is the only person who qualifies for that on the Red Wings, but they aren’t willing to trade away their best of a weak d-core

Colorado Avalanche –
The Avalanche were reportedly interested in Trouba since the start of the summer. Ridiculous reports surfaced that Matt Duchene could be part of the deal. If so, the Jets would have no choice but to accept the deal. If not, it could be difficult for the Avalanche to land Trouba unless they are willing to give up Tyson Barrie.

Arizona Coyotes –
The Coyotes are in the middle of a long rebuild, but one that is finally starting to take shape. Their only real good defenseman is Oliver Ekman-Larsson, and if they don’t want to wait for Jakob Chychrun to come up to the NHL level, Trouba could be a great pairing. Since Chychrun was just the 16th overall pick in this draft, the Jets could get some more value out of this trade, maybe even for another grumpy RFA Tobias Rieder. This would be the ideal scenario for the Jets, but a huge hole would be left in Trouba’s absence.

Boston Bruins –
You better believe the Bruins are interested. When they were considering moving up to four first round picks to acquire the top four defenseman on an offer-sheet, some interest must have come to mind. Boston is a perfect fit for Trouba, as they are real low on good defensemen, but that also goes against the Jets, as they’d only be willing to trade away draft picks, or young forwards like Ryan Spooner.

New York Rangers –
The team that was once thought to have had one of the best defence cores in the league is now scratching their head asking “what happened”. Age, injuries, and decline hit Marc Staal, and Dan Girardi as hard as a Dustin Byfuglien hit, and the loss of Keith Yandle makes them pray for healing. Jacob Trouba would fit that bill, and the Rangers could supply an asking price, but at a cost. Either Staal, or Girardi would have to be included in the deal, as cap relief. No way the Jets are willing to take those contracts on.

Toronto Maple Leafs –
The Leafs saw what happens to their latest cornerstone, Dion Phanuef, he never had a successful partner, which lead to sub-par play at times. Trouba would fit the bill as a great pair for Morgan Rielly, the Leafs up and coming star. Unfortunately the Leafs don’t have any defensemen to deal away, so the Jets would have to agree upon receiving forward prospects, and draft picks.

Any team has some potential to make an offer for Jacob Trouba, but some deals will be better than others, and the Winnipeg Jets need to make sure they don’t trade away Trouba just for the sake of trading him. They need a method to this madness.
