Winnipeg Jets Send Zach Redmond Down To AHL’s Ice Caps

Just before the Winnipeg Jets took to the ice against the St. Louis Blues on Saturday afternoon, the club let the media know they have sent down rookie defenseman Zach Redmond to the St. John’s Ice Caps of the AHL.

Redmond was recalled by the Jets on January 10th, and did not play a game in the following month. The Jets got back D Paul Postma on Friday, after a long recovery from a blood clot in his leg. Postma took Keaton Ellerby‘s position on the ice in St. Louis, and when the game sheet was released, Redmond was not on it.

Redmond is 25 years old, and has played in 11 career NHL games, with three in November 2013. In his AHL career, he has 130 games played. He has appeared in 17 games for the Ice Caps this year, notching 13 points and 14 PIMS, with a +2 rating. Redmond hasn’t played an AHL or NHL game since January 7th.

The move was long overdue, as Redmond needed some valuable playing time on the farm with the NHL stopping action for the Olympics on Sunday. Redmond wasn’t doing the team any good in the press box, as they have gone 9-3 before Saturday since he was recalled.

The Ice Caps have six games during the Jets’ break, but it is unlikely that Redmond will return when the NHL schedule resumes, barring any injuries. The Ice Caps have won 9 of their last 11 games, and host the AHL’s All-Star Classic on Monday.
