When the Winnipeg Jets drafted Nikolaj Ehlers with the 9th overall pick of the 2014 NHL Draft, they knew they were getting a top talent.

“It was certainly an exciting moment for our franchise,” Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff said. “Marcel Como reached over to my left and said ‘we’re getting a really good player here.’ You know, when get that kind of confidence from your head scout, it’s an exciting time.”

The hope was there for Ehlers right after he was drafted. Nearly 9 months later, the Danish forward has not disappointed with his production in the QMJHL. He has 35 goals and 59 assists (94 points) in 46 games this season for the Halifax Mooseheads. Ehlers’s point total leads the team and ranks fourth in the QMJHL behind Nikita Jevpalovs, Danick Martel and Conor Garland.

With this terrific production for a second straight season in juniors, Ehlers should get a good look in training camp next season. A stint in the AHL or a 9-game tryout on Winnipeg’s roster is likely in store for the 19-year old phenom.

Long-term, Ehlers should be able to be a top-six forward on the main roster. His future, along with the improved player of youngster C Mark Scheifele and D Jacob Trouba should give the Jets a lot to look forward to in the future.
