The Winnipeg Jets to Re-Sign Andrew Ladd

As the NHL season approaches a question is beginning to weigh on the minds of not just the fans of the Winnipeg Jets, but the management as well. Everyone is wondering what will the future be for Jets’ captain Andrew Ladd? Will this be the last season we see him in a Jets uniform? Or will this be one of many seasons to come for Ladd in Winnipeg?

The first question that one must ask when considering a player’s future is exactly how much they care to stay in their current city. Andrew Ladd is very optimistic about the Jets upcoming season after ending the playoff slump last season.

“There is the obvious disappointment of feeling we could have done more, but then you sit back and look at the stuff we overcame, whether it was having your top four D-men out and we held things together, and then the Evander Kane situation, to lose one of our top six forwards, bring new guys in, we never seemed to miss a beat. We kept going. I think that’s the biggest takeaway, how we dealt with that adversity and now knowing we can overcome those things.” -Andrew Ladd

Ladd is enjoying his life in Winnipeg as the city seems to be a genuine fit for his family and he is also very found of the work that the Jets’ GM has done with the club. It is in Ladd’s best interest to stay in Winnipeg at the moment; however, it is not likely he will stay with the club for a huge cut in pay (as this is the last big contract he will most likely sign). According to Fox Sports, the Jets are currently in talks with both Andrew Ladd and Dustin Byfuglien about contract extensions (both are free agents at the end of this season). The Winnipeg Free Press writer Gary Lawless being the primary source for the talks about the contract extensions.

“Ladd wants to remain in Winnipeg. He has a young family and more and more this city is a fit. He also likes the organization and the work general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff has done. So, he’s willing to work with the Jets. But not at a $5-million or more discount. All told, Ladd’s next ticket is going to be worth in the range of $40 million.” -Gary Lawless (Winnipeg Free Press)
