Winnipeg Jets Profile: Tyler Myers

Just this past season the Winnipeg Jets acquired defensemen Tyler Myers from the Buffalo Sabres. Who is Tyler Myers? What makes him so valuable to the Winnipeg Jets and their future at hand? Is Buffalo going to regret trading the young defensemen? Or are the Jets going to regret trading for him?

Tyler Myers was drafted by the Buffalo Sabres in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft at 12th overall in the first round. Myers would play in his first season with the Sabres for the 2009-2010 season where he would go 11-37-48 with a plus/minus rating of +13. Myers tallied an amazing 48 points (played all 82 games) in only his first season in the NHL (keep in mind he had a very good Sabres team surrounding him at this time).

During his second season in the NHL we would see a decline in Myers stats, for during the 2010-2011 season he would go 10-27-37 with a plus/minus of O (still a good Sabres team around him). During the next three seasons he would miss a good percentage of games and see a rather sharp decline in his stats (keep in mind this is also when we saw the Sabres rapid decline into one of the worst teams in the league). In these three seasons he would only tally a combined 53 points as opposed to his first two seasons where he tallied a combined 85 points.

This past season (before getting traded) Myers had played in 47 games with the Sabres and only tallied 13 points with a plus/minus of -13. The Jets would acquire Myers in a trade that would send Evander Kane and Zach Bogosian to the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for Drew Stafford, Myers, Joel Armia, and a 2015 first round draft selection. So what did Myers do when he put on his Jets sweater?

Tyler Myers would play in 24 games with the Jets going 3-12-15 (more points then in his 47 games with the league worst Sabres) with a plus/minus of +9. A lot of people did not have much faith in brining Myers on board; however, he has shown that with a winning team around him he can deliver all star numbers (keep in mind he’s only 25 years old). It will be interesting to see if Myers returns to his stats seen during the early days with the Sabres now that he has a playoff team surrounding him. Keep an eye out this season, Tyler Myers might just deliver one heck of a comeback performance for the Winnipeg Jets.
