Winnipeg Jets Number One Prospect: Nikolaj Ehlers

It is time to announce our long awaited number one prospect on our list of the best Winnipeg Jets prospects. At number one we have Nikolaj Ehlers a 19-year old left-winger from Denmark. What makes Ehlers suitable for our number one spot? As well as being destined for stardom with the Winnipeg Jets and with the league as a whole?

Ehlers was drafted 9th overall by the Jets in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft. Ehlers plays at the left-wing position; however, he can operate at almost any position you place him with the forwards. What impresses the most about Ehlers is his last two seasons with the Halifax Mooseheads. For a 19-year old these stats are more then spectacular.

During the 2013-2014 season we saw Ehlers deliver an over 104 point season. Yes you read that right. Ehlers went 49-55 in only 63 games played. Ehlers would not surpass that total the following season, but he would still deliver an over 100 point season going 37-63 in only 51 games played. Ehlers is the only Jets prospect who is delivering over 100 point seasons with his current club and he’s not even twenty-years old yet.

Many people are under the belief that Ehlers will be playing with the Winnipeg Jets this season after almost making the team during the following season. Willy Palov, a writer for The Chronicle Herald in Nova Scotia recently wrote about Ehlers future in Halifax,

“Also still eligible for another season of junior is superstar Nikolaj Ehlers, but no one should count on him being in a Halifax uniform this year. He very nearly made the Winnipeg Jets a year ago and was unstoppable last season in the Q as an 18-year-old. It seems highly unlikely he will return as a 19-year-old, which is why the Mooseheads picked centre Otto Somppi 19th overall in the CHL import draft this summer.” -Willy Palov

On the Hockey Writers list of the top 50 drafted NHL prospects they listed Nikolaj Ehlers at the number 7 position,

“Danish forward that possesses blazing speed and a rocket of a shot. Has the rare ability of being able to pull slick moves at top speed, and could end up being the best Danish hockey player to date. Can beat you with a pass or shot. Has a combined 263 points over the last two seasons (playoffs included).” -Bill Schoeninger

Good news for Jets fans that it appears we will get to see the 100 point powerhouse in Winnipeg sooner then many of the other Jets prospects on our list.

What do you guys think? Did Ehlers deserve the top spot on our list? (of course he did) What did you think of our prospect list? Comment below and join in on the discussion!
