Last week we saw the 9th spot on our countdown of the league’s top goaltenders with Islanders goaltender Jaroslav Halak. Today we journey to the 8th spot on our countdown with Boston Bruins goaltender Tuukka Rask. Not only will we tell you why he warrants holding the 8th spot, but we’ll also tell you how he compares to your Winnipeg Jets goaltenders.
Some may remember Rask for winning the Vezina Trophy award during the 2013-2014 NHL season. Ever since the departure of cup winning goaltender Tim Thomas, Rask has been at the helm of the Bruins net and year after year has impressed us with his consistently great statistics.
During the past season we saw Rask go 34-21-13 in 70 games played (third in the NHL) with a GAA of 2.30 and save percentage of .922. Rask finished the season with only 3 shutouts, but would finish 9th in the league in wins with 34.
Winnipeg Jets
The Bruins would fall short of making the playoffs last season, but it in no part due to Rask’s performance, who took up the role as the Bruins goaltending work horse, throwing in another consistent season in his booming career.
How does Rask compare to your Jets goaltenders in Ondrej Pavelec and Michael Hutchinson?
Ondrej Pavelec went 22-16-8 in 50 games played with a 2.28 GAA, 5 shutouts, and a save percentage of .920. During the postseason Pavelec would go 0-4 with a GAA of 3.73 and save percentage of .891.

Pavelec has Rask beat in a few categories. Pavelec had a better GAA then Rask at 2.28 (Rask had 2.30) and held more shutouts then Rask at 5 (Rask had 3). Rask does have Pavelec beaten in save percentage (.922) and in games played (70). One may give the benefit of the doubt to Rask in this case, because of the fact he played many more games then Pavelec, so naturally his GAA may be a bit higher.
Michael Hutchinson played in 38 games going 21-10-5 last season with a GAA of 2.39, 2 shutouts, and a save percentage of .914.
Hutchinson gets no cigar when it comes to Rask. Tuukka has Hutchinson beaten in every single category, but then again, are you really that shocked?
