Winnipeg Jets Lose, Sort Of

The Winnipeg Jets kicked off the Young Stars Classic in Penticton, B.C. with a 3-1 loss to the Calgary Flames on Friday night.

The Jets fell behind quick and never really recovered. The Flames scored twice within the first ten minutes of the game. One was a sharp angle shot that beat starter Connor Hellebuyck but the Jets prized goaltending prospect finished with 18 saves in his one half of the contest.

The Jets scored their lone goal with time running out in the first period. Roster darkhorse contender Brendan Lemieux converted on a feed from Jimmy Lodge to make it 2-1. Lemieux, as the Winnipeg Sun’s Ken Wiebe put it in his game story, “showed off the shift disturber element of his game, throwing some hits and doing a little chirping as well.”

Eric Comrie came in relief of Hellebuyck and stopped all 16 pucks he faced, including a penalty shot just minutes after he came into the game. The Flames added an empty net goal to give the game its final score. Courtesy of the Jets, here are the highlights from Friday’s contest, as well as interviews with coach Keith McCambridge, Lemieux, and Ryan Olson.

The Jets have the day off today, allowing Winnipeg fans to fully devote their attention to watch the Blue Bombers lose. They will take on Vancouver tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. central time in their second game of the tournament.
