Winnipeg Jets: Sergei Bobrovsky Takes on the Jets

Last week we saw the 8th spot on our countdown of the league’s top goaltenders with Bruins goaltender Tuukka Rask. Today we journey to the 7th spot on our countdown with Columbus Blue Jackets’ goaltender Sergei B0brovsky. Not only will we tell you why he warrants holding the 7th spot, but we’ll also tell you how he compares to your Winnipeg Jets goaltenders.

During the 2012-2013 season Sergei Bobrovsky became the first Russian to win the Vezina trophy award. Sergei had played with the Flyers in his early seasons, but would find his worth in Columbus with the Jackets. So what has Sergei been up to in more recent times that earns him a spot on our countdown? Well let’s show you.

During the past season we saw Bobs go 30-17-3 in 51 games played with a GAA of 2.69 and save percentage of .918. Bobs finished the season with only 2 shutouts, but would finish 14th in the league in wins with 30, and that’s is with only 51 games played (take notes Pavelec). Bobs wasn’t healthy last season; however, it is said that a healthy Bobs could be a contender for his second Vezina,

“If Bobrovsky stays healthy for the 2015-16 campaign, there is no reason to doubt that he could challenge the likes of Carey Price, Pekka Rinne or Henrik Lundqvist for his second Vezina Trophy” -Rick Gethin (Today’s slapshot)

Ondrej Pavelec went 22-16-8 in 50 games played with a 2.28 GAA, 5 shutouts, and a save percentage of .920. During the postseason Pavelec would go 0-4 with a GAA of 3.73 and save percentage of .891.

Pavelec has Bobs beat in a few categories, pertaining to GAA, shutouts, and save percentage. One could not say Bobs is better then Pavs, for Bobs is a victim of circumstance in this case. It is noteworthy to point out that Bobs only played one more game then Pavs and had fewer losses and more wins then him, not even making the postseason.

Michael Hutchinson played in 38 games going 21-10-5 last season with a GAA of 2.39, 2 shutouts, and a save percentage of .914.

Bobs and Hutch are tied in shutouts, Hutch leads in GAA, and Bobs leads Hutch in wins and save percentage. While Hutch might one day be better then Bobs, as of right now he stills has a long way to go before he can surpass Russia’s first Vezina winning goaltender.

What do you guys think? Is Bobs worthy of his place? Am I too hard on Pavs? Comment below and join in on the discussion!
