Winnipeg Jets Trim Camp Roster
The Winnipeg Jets have reduced their training camp roster following the team’s first two preseason games.
No real surprises of the eleven players sent down, including eight who will now hit the ice with the Manitoba Moose for camp: Axel Blomqvist, Austen Brassard, Aaron Harstad, David Leggio, Jimmy Lodge, Jussi Olkinuora, Brennan Serville, Peter Stoykewych. Leggio is one of the few players the Jets brought in on a professional tryout offer and he’ll now try to crack the Moose, although playing time there might be just as hard to come by.

Three players are also headed back to junior hockey – in fact, all three are going to the Western Hockey League, which kicks off its season this weekend. 2015 draft picks Jansen Harkins (Prince George), Matteo Gennaro (Prince Albert), and Michael Spacek (Red Deer) are all headed back to their respective clubs. Spacek will be going to a Rebels team that is hosting the Memorial Cup this season and could play a big role on that team.
The Jets have started the preseason 0-2. They lost the preseason opener 1-0 to the Minnesota Wild on Tuesday at the MTS Centre in Winnipeg’s first chance in 3-on-3 overtime (even though it wasn’t scheduled to be played 3-on-3 for some reason). Ondrej Pavelec looked good for the Jets, stopping 19 shots in 40 minutes of work. Nikolaj Ehlers, trying to make his case to make Winnipeg, led the team with five shots on goal.
On Wednesday, the Jets battled back from a 2-0 deficit to fall 3-2 to the Edmonton Oilers. A night after getting beat in 3-on-3 overtime, the Jets lost on a penalty shot as Matt Hendricks beat Eric Comrie in the third period for the game-winning goal. It was the only goal allowed by Comrie, who played just the third period in his NHL preseason debut. Michael Hutchison stopped 22 of 24 in the first two periods. Ben Chiarot and Adam Lowry had the goal for Winnipeg.
Next game for the Jets is tomorrow night at home against the Oilers. We’ll have a recap the following day here on Hockey at the Forks.
