The Winnipeg Jets signed their second first round pick from the 2016 NHL Entry Draft after Patrik Laine, Logan Stanley, to a three-year entry-level contract with the Winnipeg Jets. Logan is currently playing with the Windsor Spitfires in the Ontario Hockey League, and will continue to do so for the remainder of the season.

The six-foot-seven, 227 lb behemoth of a shutdown defensemen was the 18th overall pick of the Winnipeg Jets, when they moved up four spots in the draft to select him. This season in Windsor, Stanley has two goals, and seven assists good for nine points in the 20 games he’s played in.

More from Jets White Out

Stanley was a bit of a mixed bag at Winnipeg Jets training camp, and perhaps that’s why he didn’t get a contract until he began to excel once again in the CHL. The Jets coaching staff saw a huge defensive minded defender who can chip in some offense if need be. Not many players can out-battle or out-will him in the corners, or in front of the net. Some saw a player who is still trying to grow into his huge stature, and thus fumbling the puck, or making simple movements look like a chore.

Luckily for the Jets, they have all kinds of time to let the nineteen year old progress before bringing him to the big leagues. Josh Morrissey’s emergence on the left side of the blueline should make sure the Jets don’t rush their best prospect in junior hockey.

In the future, Stanley will be expected to assume the roll of a top-four blue liner, perhaps teaming up with the ever improving Jacob Trouba. An even more tantilazing thought would to pair Stanley with Tyler Myers, who also stands at six-foot-seven. I’ve always been curious how a Dustin Byfuglien, Tyler Myers pair could turn out. Since they both shoot the same way, it’s been something avoided by head coach Paul Maurice, but with another monster in the system, he finally has an opportunity to make a monster line.

Signing Logan Stanley didn’t change his status with the Winnipeg Jets, but it proves they think he’s “The One”
