The Winnipeg Jets have just put forward Shawn Matthias on the trade block. Every team will now have a chance to pick up the 10 year veteran.
Matthias hasn’t been a big factor with the Winnipeg Jets lately. He’s only played in about half of their games, and his point and goal production is minimal. Matthias no longer fits into the Jets lineup as there is so many new prospects coming in. Although he hasn’t been effective, the Jets will be able to find a suitor in the next little while.
If Matthias gets traded, it’ll likely be to a team with a shot at the playoffs looking for a depth role to be filled. He won’t fetch a whole lot in value as he does have a hunk of cap that he’s taking up. Although he’s making over $2.1 Million, somebody will want him to make a cup run with them.
Shawn Matthias’ future
For Shawn Matthias, this is a wake up call, and a second chance. When he’s off to his next team, he will really have to pick up the pace. If he continues his slump, he’ll likely be playing in Europe or could even be finished his hockey career. I think Matthias will need to establish a role as a depth player. If he can find a regular shift, he’s probably getting another NHL contract. A solid spot on the 3rd line would be perfect for him, but the fourth line would work as well.
I’m actually quite surprised that they put Matthias on the block before Marko Dano. Sure, I understand the cap situation but Dano hasn’t played since October. Shawn Matthias has at least been a sporadic player unlike Dano. I guess the cap is really that influencial on a trade these days.
I think Matthias could maybe go to Vegas, because they have cap and they’re probably looking for another guy to have as insurance. Maybe they could package him in a deal with Dano or Hutchinson, but you never know.
