Winnipeg Jets Trade Deadline: Trading with Pittsburgh unlikely

WINNIPEG, MB - OCTOBER 29: Blake Wheeler

The Pittsburgh Penguins have been a powerhouse in the NHL for many years, and likely will continue the trend. The Winnipeg Jets are just coming into what they’d envisioned themselves to be. A trade between these two is highly unlikely.

What are the odds of two possible Stanley Cup contenders swapping players? Highly unlikely. The only chance I could see a deal going down is if it’s either a minor league/depth deal or a “hockey trade”. A hockey trade is a deal which is a one-for-one deal that is specifically meant to attend to the needs of a team, or shake some things up.

Do the Winnipeg Jets or Pittsburgh Penguins need a shake up?

I don’t think, I just know a shakeup isn’t necessary for the Jets. We have one of the top teams in the league, so why mess with something that’s already working? The one thing that I could see the Jets doing is trading either of Nic Petan or Shawn Matthias. These guys are two who need a change in scenery, because they aren’t key factors to the Jets lineup, and have struggled.

The Penguins are one of the last teams in need of a change. They’re on a five game winning streak, so it just makes no sense. Do they look to add some pieces? Yes, of course, but those pieces aren’t going to come from Winnipeg. They’ll have to look elsewhere to find who and what they want for the playoffs.

Maybe the Jets and Pens make a swap to get us another tough guy who’ll last throughout the playoffs. Maybe the Jets go after Ryan Reaves. Even with that kind of a deal, it still doesn’t make sense.

Next: Under the radar trade options for the Winnipeg Jets

I think the Penguins and Jets should just avoid each other come this deadline. Not only is it a waste of time to discuss a trade, but a trade between the two doesn’t make much sense.
