Winnipeg Jets need to hurry as top players are flying off the board

OTTAWA, ON - FEBRUARY 17: Derick Brassard

The Trade Deadline is fast approaching. Winnipeg Jets fans will be getting a change this year as we will look to be buyers for the first time ever. We’re looking like a contender, so now it’s time to go all in.

Finally after selling our players every trade deadline, we will go in at a different angle. We’re the buyers. There isn’t a whole lot of time left before deadline day, and names are starting to come off the board. There is progressively more trades every day, and the Winnipeg Jets haven’t been part of one.

Knowing that our team is linked to many different players is quite exciting. It’s just time for us to take action and work a deal.

Who are we linked to?

According to many different sources, we are linked to Erik Karlsson, Derick Brassard, Rick Nash, and possibly a few others like Mike Hoffman. We are also reported to be the frontrunner for acquiring Derick Brassard, who could make a really nice addition to our lineup.

Derick Brassard currently sits with 18 goals and 20 assists for 38 points in 58 games. He’s a second line center on Ottawa, and likely would fit into our second line too. I’m not sure whether he’d take Bryan Little’s center role, and we’d move Little to the wing, or if Brassard would just go straight to the wing.

Knowing that we’re linked to two Ottawa Senators could mean we’re possibly talking about a package deal. Would Chevy be able to work a deal to bring both Brassard and Karlsson to Winnipeg? It would sure be expensive, but it’s not out of the question. I think if that were the case, Winnipeg would hope to get Brassard a deal extending longer than just the remainder of the season.

What can we say goodbye to?

Knowing that we’re going big this trade deadline, we can definitely kiss our first round pick goodbye, and maybe even our first rounder next year as well. I’d like to say that Nic Petan and Marko Dano will find new homes on or before Monday, but you can never be sure. Shawn Matthias wouldn’t surprise me if there was a veteran for veteran trade like I had previously mentioned in my last article.

Saying bye to a couple prospects may be hard, but could be something we’re required to do. Mason Appleton and even Kristian Vesalainen could be out of Winnipeg before even playing in a single game.

When’s it all going to go down?

I can assure you there will be deals that go down, I just don’t know which ones and when. Maybe they go down today. Maybe tomorrow. Who knows.
