The Winnipeg Jets have just announced the signing of 26 year old centre, Logan Shaw. They also have recalled Sami Niku from the Manitoba Moose.

Logan Shaw Signing

Kevin Cheveldayoff did some work this morning, signing a centreman named Logan Shaw to a one year, two way contract. The deal will pay Shaw an annual average salary of $675,000, meaning that’s his cap hit, but since we’re already 15 games in we won’t have to pay him that much. It’s also a two way deal, so it’ll vary based on if he’s playing in the NHL or AHL.

Logan Shaw has played a small portion of this season with the San Diego Gulls of the AHL this season, recording two goals and three assists in seven games. Shaw will switch over to the Manitoba Moose or even the Winnipeg Jets if he performs well.

Shaw has 180 games of NHL experience, accumulating 31 points. When playing in the NHL, he has been a bottom six forward. Last season Shaw played 72 games split between the Montreal Canadiens and the Anaheim Ducks. He also has played in 12 total playoff games.

Honestly, I think this could be a temporary replacement for Brendan Lemieux. Lemieux isn’t just missing last night and tonight’s game, Winnipeg will probably send him down or at least scratch him for a little while. Lemieux hasn’t been performing, and cost us the game against Florida. This will likely result in him sitting. Shaw might find himself getting some games on the big team this season.

Brendan Lemieux won't be back anytime soon. light. Also

Sami Niku

Along with signing Logan Shaw, the Winnipeg Jets announced they had called Sami Niku up from the Manitoba Moose.

Niku was a 7th round pick in the 2015 NHL Entry draft, and has quickly become one of Winnipeg’s best looking prospects. Niku was drafted in 2015, and saw himself suiting up for the Manitoba Moose last season.

Niku was one of the leaders on the Moose for scoring, coming in second to Mason Appleton, who also had a breakout season. With 16 goals, and 38 assists for 54 points, he looked to be a player who could soon land on the Winnipeg Jets roster.

With five points in twelve games for the Moose this season, Winnipeg gave him the call. This comes after Dmitry Kulikov left the game with an upper-body injury. He’ll be sidelined for four weeks, which should be more than enough time for Niku to get comfortable.
