Winnipeg Jets defenseman Josh Morrissey has avoided a suspension, after it was just announced they have fined him.
Josh Morrissey will be fined $8,467.74 for unsportsmanlike conduct on TJ Oshie of the Washington Capitals. This comes after Morrissey slamed Oshie to the ice, during a battle in the corner. Oshie was quite shaken up, taking a few seconds to return to his feet and make his way to the bench.
The incident happened with just over a minute left to play in the third period. Washington had their goalie pulled and the score was 2-1 for the Winnipeg Jets. If you watch the video here, you can see the Kyle Connor also managed an empty netter from our own end to seal the win, right after the hit/body slam was delivered.
This isn’t the first time Josh Morrissey has found himself in trouble. Last year he was suspended a single game for cross checking Minnesota’s Eric Staal.
Morrissey has become one of our top defenders, finding his way onto our top defensive pairing very fast. The 23 year old d-man was our 13th overall pick in 2013, and has proven himself as one of our more solid picks. He has played two full seasons in the NHL already, making this his third. In 181 career NHL games with the Winnipeg Jets, he’s managed to put up 14 goals and 40 assists for 54 points.
Despite being seemingly injured on the play, TJ Oshie is okay, and has had no injuries reported following the slam. Oshie currently has nine goals and five assists for fourteen points in nineteen games with the Capitals this season.

Both Winnipeg and Josh Morrissey are very lucky. This play could very well have been suspendable, which would’ve kept him off the ice for a few games. Morrissey should be a little more careful now that he has two incidents that have been punished by NHL Player Safety.
