Winnipeg Jets Reassign Kristian Vesalainen Again
Didn’t the Winnipeg Jets just call him up? Yes, you read the title right. Kristian Vesalainen is going back down to the AHL.
Kristian Vesalainen was recalled by the Winnipeg Jets a few days ago, after a strong eight game stint with the Moose. While playing down in Manitoba, he was able to get himself a nice total of three goals and five assists for eight points. A point per game player usually deserves a call up back to the big club. However, this is not why he was recalled.
When Winnipeg has Vesalainen down in the AHL, the forward actually has a clause in his contract allowing him to opt out and go back to play in Europe. I’d have to agree what my colleague Kyle said in the article about Winnipeg calling him up. It’s because the kid has no clue about Manitoba, so why stay when you’re not making nearly the amount of an NHL salary, or even what you could be making back at home in Europe.
There were many rumours about him opting out to Europe, leading to Winnipeg calling him up. Vesalainen was a healthy scratch for the game last night against Vancouver, which was a 6-3 win for the Winnipeg Jets.
Today, it was just announced he would be returning to the Manitoba Moose. Now, I’m not sure I quite understand these series of transactions, but it happened anyways. Manitoba’s next game is on Friday, giving him a few extra days of rest.
Now, about the clause. He’s back in the minors and has all the right to pull the trigger, sending him back to Europe. Maybe, for whatever reason, he told the Jets he wouldn’t opt out, allowing them to send him to the AHL with no repercussions.

We’ll likely have to wait for a few more days to see what the youngster decides to do for the rest of this season, if he does anything.
