Winnipeg Jets head coach Paul Maurice announced in a press conference that Dustin Byfuglien will be placed on injured reserve.
The Winnipeg Jets have confirmed that Dustin Byfuglien suffered a concussion from a hit delivered to Jamie Oleksiak of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Paul Maurice also stated he will be placed on injured reserve, making him unable to skate for the minimum time span of a week.
Dustin Byfuglien appeared quite shaken up on the play, and was taken back for concussion tests. The big man was actually cleared to play, which is why he returned to the game shortly after.
Byfuglien missed tonight’s game against Chicago, after being listed as “day to day” with “concussion like symptoms”. It didn’t take very long into Paul Maurice‘s post game interview/press conference to be asked about Big Buff. His answer was plain and simple.
The big man has appeared in 21 games with the Jets this season, burying two goals and adding 15 assists to give him 17 points. Last season Buff totalled 45 points, which he’s on pace to top. The only thing that will stop him are more injuries that keep him sidelined.
Consequently, the Winnipeg Jets will have Cameron Schilling and Sami Niku to take the places of Byfuglien and Joe Morrow, who sat out of tonight’s game with a “day to day, lower body injury”. He could return soon, or be out the next week. Nothing much has really been disclosed.
On the note of Cam Schilling filling in, the 30 year old played in only his seventh ever NHL game, and recorded his first NHL point, on an assist to Nikolaj Ehlers’ second goal. The defender played very solid, making smart decisions and got a few shots on Blackhawks goaltender Corey Crawford.

Don’t be surprised if Buff takes longer than a week to recover. When you have concussions, it’s never smart to rush a return. In the meantime, we’ll see Sami Niku and Schilling on the back end.
