We can get one thing straight, Nikolaj Ehlers looked brilliant last night when the Winnipeg Jets took down the Chicago Blackhawks. The question is, will the high level performance stick?

So we already have one thing down for sure, and it is that Nikolaj Ehlers was spectacular in our 6-5 win against Chicago last night. He saw himself net a hat trick, finding the twine almost as much in one game as he has all season.

Ehlers knows he’s been playing well as of late, but also stated he didn’t play very well defensively:

“I feel like I’ve been playing some good hockey lately. It’s gotten better and better. My defensive game was not good today, but I worked hard as I can to continue growing as a player and today I got rewarded.”

Nikolaj is now getting back on track, with eight goals and seven assists for 15 points in 24 games. It’s still probably not where he wants to be, but it’s definitely a good start. The beginning of the season was pretty rough for the young winger, but he managed to pull himself together and has been racking up a bunch of points in the last four to six games.

The next question is, will he continue to produce? I honestly think he’s only beginning. The poor play at the beginning of the season, in my opinion, was because he just came out of the offseason in a very comfortable position after he signed his new contract.

The new deal is set to pay him $6 Million per year for the next seven years, which makes an accumulated total of $42 Million. This is a deal a player could get a bit too comfortable with, which isn’t what a team wants. When that happens, you sometimes will see what was going on (or maybe it would be better to say what wasn’t going on) with Nikolaj Ehlers during the first part of the season.

Ehlers could go on a bit of a run in the next five games. The Jets schedule for the next 7-8 games is looking fairly easy, meaning we could pick up a bunch of wins and give some of our guys a spark.
