In anticipation of the 2021 NHL season, the Winnipeg Jets have recalled forward, David Gustaffson from his loan in Sweden.
As the NHL season is just under a month away, teams are starting to get ready for the grueling schedule that is ahead of them. Earlier this offseason, the Winnipeg Jets loaned some of their younger players to Europe so they could get some much needed competitive game time before the 2021 campaign.
All of these loan deals had clauses for the Jets players to be recalled back to Winnipeg before the start of the new season. The Jets are starting to exercise the recall option now.
The first known player that the Jets have called back to North America is David Gustaffson. Illegal Curve Hockey originally broke the news.
Originally, the Jets drafted Gustaffson in the second round of the 2018 NHL Entry Draft. In 2019-2020 the 6’2″ forward competed in 22 games with the Jets, then was selected to represent Sweden at the 2020 IIHF World Junior Championships. At the tournament, the twenty year old picked up an injury and upon recovering from it, he played 13 games in the AHL for the Manitoba Moose before the campaign was suspended due to the pandemic.
This year, Gustafsson was off to a good start for Tingsryds AIF, who compete in HockeyAllsvenskan. HockeyAllsvenskan is the second division of the Swedish hockey pyramid. In 16 games for Tingsryd, Gustafsson had seven goals, ten assists and had +2 plus/minus. Those stat lines ranked him third on his team in points.
Unfortunately before the Jets recalled Gustafsson, he suffered an injury and was out of the lineup in Tingsyrd’s most five recent games. The injury does not look to be severe and he is set to be ready for Jets training camp.
