Winnipeg Jets: Merry Christmas! Watch Two Prospects Play Today
The 2021 IIHF World Junior Championship kicks off on this Christmas day and two Winnipeg Jets prospects will be in action this evening.
Today is a wonderful opportunity for Winnipeg Jets staff, players, and fans alike. For most people, there is nothing better than Christmas day, but this year it may have gotten better for some. Today, the World Junior Championship tournament starts in Edmonton.
The tournament features eight countries comprising of the best under-twenty players in the world competing for a gold medal. There are three Winnipeg Jets prospects competing in the prestigious tournament and two of them get in on the action today.
Those two players are Ville Heinola and Henri Nikkanen, who represent Finland. Finland kick off their tournament against Germany tonight at 5 p.m. Central Time.
Germany is coming into this game after just getting out of their mandatory quarantine. They had to quarantine because eight players on their team tested positive for virus on December 18th. Meanwhile, Finland had a tuneup game against the United States on Tuesday night and they look fit and ready for today’s game.
Winnipeg Jets
Finland is looking to win a medal this year after losing to Sweden in the bronze medal game and finishing in fourth place last year. Most recently, Finland won gold in the 2019 edition of the tournament.
Finland is led by Ville Heinola. Heinola is rated as one of the top defensemen in the whole tournament. He is coming off a 2019-2020 season, where he played eight games for the Jets and had one goal and four assists. He is definitely someone to keep a close eye on.
The 19-year-old Nikkanen is not as well-known as Heinola. Nikkanen was drafted in the fourth round of the 2019 NHL Entry Draft by Winnipeg and has yet to sign a contract with the Jets. The 6’4″ forward has good vision and great size and has the potential to be a solid NHL player.
A great tournament from Nikkanen could help him earn a nice contract with Winnipeg. Most fans will be seeing Nikkanen play live for the first time today and he should be fun to watch.
