In a must-see World Juniors gold medal game, we got to see Winnipeg Jets prospect, Cole Perfetti, and Canada face off against the United States.

The whole hockey world turned their attention tonight to the 2021 IIHF World Junior Championship gold medal game to watch the United States and Canada compete for gold. The Winnipeg Jets did have interest in this game as their first round pick from the 2020 NHL Entry Draft, Cole Perfetti represents Canada.

This game definitely did not disappoint. The speed and physicality of this game had yet to be seen in this tournament. Ultimately the United States took home the Gold by a score of 2-0.

Game Recap

The teams traded chances in the first period, but the United States got on the board first courtesy of an Alec Turcotte tip-in goal. The U.S. went into the locker room up 1-0 after one.

The U.S. wasted no time extending its lead at the start of the second period. Trevor Zegras scored 32 seconds into the frame to give the Americans a 2-0 lead.

Canada’s coaching staff decided to change their lines around and Perfetti was subsequently moved on a line with Quinton Byfield and Dylan Holloway. This line generated some great scoring chances but unfortunately for them, they could not get a puck passed Spencer Knight, in the American’s goal.

Both teams had some great scoring opportunities in the second, but the United States took a 2-0 lead into the third period.

Canada started the third with more line changes and Perfetti started in a line with Connor McMichael and Jakob Pelletier. Canada threw everything they had at the United States’ net but Knight and the American’s defense stood strong and played absolutely amazing to seal the 2-0 shutout against the best offense of the tournament.

Perfetti finished the game with no points, three shots, and an even plus/minus. He did have some good scoring chances in this one but failed to find the back of the net in the loss.

Perfetti’s next stop will be in Winnipeg where he will complete a seven-day quarantine then will join up with the Jets at training camp.
