Winnipeg Jets Lineup is Starting to Take Shape for the 2021 Season
The Winnipeg Jets are in the full swing of things at their training camp. With that being said, their lineup is starting to take shape for the 2021 season.
We are officially one week away from when the Winnipeg Jets will kick off their 2021 campaign against the same team that eliminated them last postseason, the Calgary Flames.
Currently, the Jets are in training camp and the players are battling out for roster spots and positions on the depth chart.
The Jets had their first and only scrimmage of camp yesterday and today the lines are looking awfully similar, which is a good indication that these will be the lines come opening night.
The lines forward lines at today’s practice can be found in the tweet below (courtesy of @MitchellClinton):
Many people believed that the Jets’ top-two lines would consist of Ehlers, Scheifele, Wheeler, Connor, Stastny, and Laine and that seems to be the case.
The big thing that Winnipeg supporters should look at is the bottom-six. The Jets’ bottom forward lines are taking shape.
The third line consists of Copp, Lowry, and Appleton. One name that many people figured that would challenge for a spot on this line is Mathieu Perreault, but Perreault practiced with the Jets’ other practice group today.
There is still time for Perreault to make a case for himself on this line, but right now he is on the outside looking in. He could find himself as a fill-in with this group when the season begins.
Since Jansen Harkins was not on the ice today, Kristian Vesalainen took his spot on the fourth line. The line of Harkins, Thompson, and Lewis impressed yesterday and it looks like Paul Maurice likes that combination. If they keep performing well, expect Lewis to receive a contract from the Jets in the coming days and for this to be the fourth line at the start of the season.
The defensive pairings are a little more up in the air than upfront for the Jets. The d-pairs for today’s skate can be found below:
One major omission from this group is Dylan Samberg. The rookie was a standout at the college level for the University of Minnesota-Duluth but may need time to adapt to the professional game.
It will be interesting to see when Ville Heinola returns from the World Juniors if his return will have an effect on Maurice’s current pairings on the backend.
The top-four defensemen look set, but there is still plenty of competition at the bottom of the defensive depth chart.
