Although the Winnipeg Jets may be waiting on their opponent for the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs and the Manitoba Moose‘s season has ended, there are still Jets’ prospects in action.

Two Winnipeg prospects are competing at the 2021 IIHF World Championship in Riga, Latvia. These prospects are Cole Perfetti of Canada and Leon Gawanke of Germany.

Both of these players suited up in the AHL for the Moose throughout the 2021 regular season and at the end of the season, they were invited to compete for their respective countries at this prestigious tournament.

Perfetti and Canada are struggling and have yet to win a game at the Worlds, but Gawanke and Germany are playing quite the contrary and are currently the surprise of the tournament.

Germany and Winnipeg Jets prospect, Leon Gawanke, are currently undefeated at the IIHF World Championship

Germany did not have the toughest of games to open their tournament as they beat Italy easily 9-4 then, in their second game, they beat Norway 5-1. Gawanke even added a goal in the victory over Norway. (The goal can be seen in the tweet below:)

Germany faced their toughest test so far on Monday when they matched up against Canada. In the battle of Winnipeg prospects, Germany completed the upset as they won 3-1 to improve their record 3-0-0.

Gawanke has had a great tournament so far. Besides his one goal, the twenty-one-year-old has averaged 13 minutes and 42 seconds of ice time per game and has a +2 rating. It has been fun to watch Gawanke compete against some of the best players on the international stage and he is definitely worth keeping an eye on for the rest of the tournament.

Gawanke and Germany will look to keep their undefeated record alive when they face off against Kazakhstan today at 8:00 a.m. central time. This game can be watched on TSN3 in Canada.
