It was only the first shift of the opening game of the second round against the Montreal Canadiens when the Winnipeg Jets suffered a major injury to one of their defensive stalwarts.

Dylan DeMelo suffered a lower-body injury in the opening minute of the game and was subsequently ruled out for the remainder of the contest, in which the Jets lost game one 5-3.

After the game, Paul Maurice said DeMelo would be evaluated on Thursday. But during his press conference after yesterday’s optional skate, Maurice told the media that DeMelo is still being evaluated and could not provide an update for Winnipeg supporters.

The Winnipeg Jets have revealed that Dylan DeMelo will be out of the lineup for game two and added there is no specific timetable for his return.

After today’s morning skate, Maurice revealed that DeMelo’s injury is a “soft tissue injury” and then further stated that the injury is “beyond day-to-day.” Maurice said because of the type of injury DeMelo sustained, he could not give a concrete answer on how long DeMelo will be out of the lineup for.

This is tough news for Winnipeg and DeMelo considering how well DeMelo had played during their first round series against the Edmonton Oilers. Although the Jets number two did not pick up any points in the four games versus the Oilers, he played an integral role in shutting down both Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl.

It is projected that Jordie Benn will replace DeMelo in the lineup. Subsequently, Tucker Poolman will move on a pair with Josh Morrissey, and Benn will play alongside Logan Stanley.
