Heading into yesterday, the Winnipeg Jets had one remaining big-name restricted free agent (RFA) after both Neal Pionk and Logan Stanley had been resigned.

That player was Andrew Copp and there was a big question on if the Jets would ultimately resign him or if they would trade him due to the Jets limited salary cap room and Copp’s likely raise in salary due to his outstanding play from last season.

Copp was scheduled to have an arbitration hearing in the coming weeks, but that is no longer needed as Copp and the Jets front office finally agreed to terms on a new contract last night.

Andrew Copp has signed a one-year deal to stay with the Winnipeg Jets

Copp’s new deal carries an average annual value of $3,640,000 and he will be an unrestricted free agent when the 2022 offseason begins.

The twenty-seven-year-old had the best year of his six-year NHL career this past season and, it is worth noting, it came in a shortened season.

The Ann Arbor, Michigan Native was constantly moved among the Jets’ top-three forward lines and always stepped up for the Jets in 2021. He finished the season with 15 goals, 24 assists, and a plus-two plus/minus.

Copp was also the backbone of the Jets’ penalty kill as he led all Winnipeg forwards in time on ice when killing penalties with an average of two minutes and thirty seconds per game on the kill.

It will be interesting to see what line Paul Maurice and the Jets coaching staff place Copp on to start the 2021-2022 season.

The Jets have one remaining RFA left to sign and that is, defenseman, Johnathan Kovacevic. The twenty-four-year-old played last season in the AHL with the Manitoba Moose and was one of their top defensemen. According to Cap Friendly, the Jets have signed Kovacevic, but Winnipeg has yet to announce the move. Stay tuned to our site for more coverage regarding the potential Kovacevic signing.
