The World Junior Championship is always a great tournament to watch that features some of the best under-twenty hockey players in the world. It is even better to watch this year as a Winnipeg Jets supporter considering the Jets have four prospects competing at the tournament.

Day two of the tournament was another action-packed day at the WJC and included a game that went into overtime.

Winnipeg Jets prospects, Nikita Chibrikov and Daniel Torgersson were in action on the second day at the World Junior Championship

Here is our recap of the second day of the WJC and a preview of the games on day three of the games:

Day 2 Recap

Nikita Chibrikov and Russia win their first game vs. Switzerland

Russia and Chibrikov lost their opening game of the tournament and were looking to bounce back yesterday against Switzerland, which they ultimately did.

Russia started the game strong and scored three unanswered goals to open the game and Switzerland answered with one of their own at the end of the first period.

Both sides added a tally in the third and Russia won the contest by a 4-1 scoreline. Chibrikov added an assist on Russia’s first goal of the game. Chibrikov took a shot that forced a rebound and Danila Yurkov slotted the puck past the Swiss netminder.

Chibrikov finished the game with one assist, 4 shots, and a plus-1 plus/minus in 17:38 of time on ice.

After starting the tournament with games on back-to-back days, Russia will be off today and the next time we will see Chibrikov in action is tomorrow when Russia matches up against Slovakia.

Daniel Torgersson and Sweden perfect through two games

In the final game of the day, Sweden and Torgersson were able to win their second game in a row by beating Slovakia 3-0 despite Slovakia outshooting them 48-27.

Torgersson had the lowest amount of ice time for Sweden forwards as he only played 8:56 in the game and did not register a shift in the third period. The nineteen-year-old did not register a shot in the game.

Just like Russia, Sweden will be off today because they are coming off playing back-to-back games. Tomorrow night they face an all-important, must-watch game against the United States.

Germany wins it in Overtime

Although there were no Jets prospects playing in the Germany vs. Czechia game, there was a must-see moment as Germany won the game 2-1 in the first overtime game of the tournament. Alexander Blank scored on a terrific shot to secure Germany’s first win at the WJC.

Day 3 Preview

There are only two games today at the WJC and both feature former Winnipeg Jets first-round picks.

In the first game of this Tuesday’s slate of games, at 3:30 p.m. CT, Winnipeg’s 2021 first-round pick Chaz Lucius and the United States will face off against Switzerland

Then to close out the day at 6:00 p.m. CT, Jets 2020 tenth overall selection Cole Perfetti and Canada will take on Austria.

Both games can be seen on TSN1/4/5 in Canada and the NHL Network in the United States.

Update: After this article was published, it was announced that two U.S. players tested positive for COVID and they had to forfeit today’s game versus Switzerland.
