Cole Perfetti Scores First NHL Goal but Winnipeg Jets Lose in D.C.
The Winnipeg Jets faced a tough test last night as they went to Washington D.C. to face off against the Capitals who are near the top of the Metropolitan Division standings.
The Jets could not have asked for a better to start to this game. Within two minutes and twenty seconds, the Jets had a 2-0 lead.
Winnipeg got an early powerplay in the game and Kyle Connor got the Jets on the board just over a minute into the game on the powerplay
Then just over a minute later, Cole Perfetti scored his first NHL goal to put the Winnipeg Jets up 2-0
After Connor redirected a pass to Pierre-Luc Dubois, who was flying down the neutral zone, Dubois and Perfetti went on a two-on-one.
Dubois then fired a quick pass to Perfetti, who caught the pass and then released a shot past the Capitals’ netminder to give the Jets a two-goal lead at the start of the game.
After this goal, the Jets’ fast start faded and the Capitals found their game. Alex Ovechkin scored his twenty-seventh goal of the season to make the scoreline 2-1 after one period.
Dmitry Orlov then scored the lone goal in the second period to make this a 2-2 tie game going into the final twenty minutes of regulation.
Four minutes and fifteen seconds into the third period, Aliaksei Protas scored a third unanswered goal for Washington to give them their first lead of the game.
Fortunately for the Jets, Dubois was able to score to equalize the game with just over one minute remaining in regulation to force the game into overtime.
Overtime did not last long as Tom Wilson scored the game winning goal, on his own rebound, twenty-six seconds into the three-on-three to give the Capitals all two points from the contest.
This game was the Jets’ fifth game of their eight-game road trip to start 2022. The Jets now have a 3-1-1 record on this trip.
It is also worth noting that Nikolaj Ehlers suffered an injury late in the third period in D.C. and he has already been ruled out for Thursday’s game and is likely to miss more time.
The Jets just have today off before they return to the ice tomorrow night (January 20) for a Central Division matchup in the Music City against the Nashville Predators.
