Winnipeg Jets Acquire Player They Lost in Kraken Expansion Draft
There was no telling what the Winnipeg Jets would do leading up to the 2022 trade deadline. The Jets currently sit four points out of the second Western Wild Card spot and many did not know whether the Jets would be buyers, sellers, both, or remain stagnant at the deadline.
After the Jets’ 6-4 win over the Chicago Blackhawks last night, Kevin Cheveldayoff and the Jets management team made their first trade of the deadline in the early hours of the morning.
The Winnipeg Jets acquired Mason Appleton from the Seattle Kraken
Appleton was originally drafted by the Jets in the sixth round of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft and made his NHL debut with Winnipeg during the 2018-2019 season.
The now twenty-six-year-old had an outstanding 2021 season with the Jets where he played in all 56 regular season games and scored 12 goals, registered 13 assists, and a plus-11 plus/minus.
With Appleton’s terrific season and the fact that his contract carried an average annual value of $900,000, the Seattle Kraken selected him in their expansion draft for their inaugural season.
Unfortunately for Seattle, their season has not gone to plan and they currently sit in last place in the Western Conference with 44 points in 63 games. Therefore they have become sellers at this deadline.
Appleton’s contract expires at the end of this season and the Jets have given up a 2023 fourth-round pick in exchange for the forward.
Appleton has played in 49 games for the Kraken this season and has six goals and seventeen assists while amassing a minus-four rating.
