Paul Maurice made a huge decision back in mid-December when he decided to resign as head coach of the Winnipeg Jets because they needed a new voice to get them to the next place.

Subsequently, the Jets front office promoted then-assistant coach, Dave Lowry, to interim head coach. This promotion was Lowry’s first time being an NHL head coach. Before that he coached in the WHL for seven seasons during three separate stints.

The Jets started strong under Lowry’s tutelage winning four out of Lowry’s first six games as bench boss, but since that time the Jets have cooled off and have an extremely low probability of making the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

The stats show that the Winnipeg Jets have not improved under Dave Lowry

At the end of the day, results are what matters in the NHL. Coaches can put different systems in place and have different styles of play, but if the team is not producing wins and points it does not make a difference. NHL coaches are measured by their team’s success.

Therefore it is important to look at the Jets’ record and winning percentage this season while Maurice and Lowry were at the helm.

Under Paul Maurice this season, Winnipeg posted a 13-11-5 record for 31 points in 29 games for a .534 win percentage.

In the 48 games since Lowry took over, the Jets have a 22-20-6 record which gives them 50 points and a .521 win percentage during that timeframe.

Although the 2021-2022 Jets have played more games under Lowry than Maurice, they have a lower winning percentage under Lowry.

With these stats, I think the Jets need new leadership for next season. Rather than promoting from within the franchise, the Jets should hire a new face to the franchise to lead their team.

We have seen how well it has worked this season for the New York Rangers with Gerard Gallant and even how the Montreal Canadiens have drastically improved since hiring Martin St. Louis.

It is also worth noting that it is not like the Jets are in the midst of a rebuild. Winnipeg has a great core of players who are in their prime and they should be challenging for the Stanley Cup. A new coach may be the missing piece in the puzzle.
