This was only a matter of time coming for the Winnipeg Jets. With the Vegas Golden Knights beating the Washington Capitals 4-3 in overtime last night, the Jets have been eliminated from contention for the 2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

The Jets sit ten points behind the Dallas Stars who are in the second Western Conference Wild Card playoff spot with five games remaining for the season, but since Dallas and Vegas, who are two points behind them in third place, face off on Tuesday, there is no chance the Jets could catch the Wild Card playoff spots.

For the first time since the 2016-2017 season, the Winnipeg Jets will miss the Stanley Cup Playoffs

Before the season began, the Jets had the seventeenth best odds to win the Stanley Cup. Currently, out of the seventeen teams with the best Stanley Cup odds, only four of those teams will miss the playoffs (Jets, Islanders, Kraken, Flyers).

The Jets were extremely inconsistent throughout the season, failing to put together any major winning streaks and they also struggled mightily against Eastern Conference opponents, posting a 10-18-2 record when facing teams from the east.

Currently, the Jets are bottom-half in the league in goals against per game (3.17), shots against per game (33.1), shootout wins (2), and penalty kill (74.3%).

The Jets’ last road game of the season is tonight as they match up against the Carolina Hurricanes in Raleigh. Then the Jets will have a four-game homestand to finish the regular season as they host the Colorado Avalanche on Sunday, Philadelphia Flyers on Wednesday, Calgary Flames on Friday, and Seattle Kraken on May 1.

Although the Jets have been eliminated, the final few games of the 2021-2022 regular season should be fun to watch around the NHL. There is a four-team fight for the Western Conference Wild Card. Nashville is in first with 93 points in 77 games, Dallas has 91 points from 77 games, Vegas has 89 points from 78 games, and Vancouver sits in fourth with 87 points in 77 games.
