The Winnipeg Jets and Seattle Kraken had the final game of the 2021-2022 NHL regular season this afternoon.
The Jets came into this game looking to finish their underwhelming season on a high note. Coming into this game, the Jets were riding a three-game win streak and had a chance to sweep their final four-game homestand. Also, a win versus the Kraken would tie the Jets’ longest winning streak of the regular season at four games.
Eric Comrie was given the start in net for Winnipeg in this one, after he picked up his first career shutout on Wednesday, while Chris Driedger was also coming off a shutout in the Kraken’s last game.
The Winnipeg Jets finished the 2021-2022 regular season with a thrilling 4-3 win over the Seattle Kraken
The Jets were ready to go for the start of this matinee matchup and Morgan Barron opened the scoring early into this one as he scored his second goal of the season.
Barron took an advantage of a Kraken turnover at the Jets’ defensive blueline and led a two-on-one rush with Jansen Harkins. Harkins made a nice pass to give Barron an in-close breakaway. Barron then made a terrific forehand to backhand and back to forehand move and ripped a shot over Driedger’s blocker-side shoulder to give the Jets an early 1-0 lead.
The Jets and Kraken traded chances the rest of the first period, but neither side could find a goal in the opening frame and the Jets went into the intermission with a one-goal lead.
Seattle dominated the second frame en route to scoring three unanswered goals and outshooting the Jets 14-5 in the period. Alex Wennberg scored on the powerplay nearly six minutes into the period then Daniel Sprong and Riley Sheahan scored a minute apart to give Seattle a 3-1 lead after two periods.
The Jets started the third period with a point to prove and flipped the script of their dreadful second period.
Blake Wheeler scored just under five minutes into the final frame off of a Paul Stastny offensive zone faceoff win one-timer. This assist was a milestone point for Stastny as it was the 800th point of his NHL career.
Dominic Tonianto was able to tie the game on a one-timer from the high slot courtesy of a nice passing play between Harkins and Barron to set the power forward up.
Then just one minute and forty-nine seconds after Tonianto’s tying goal, Kyle Connor scored his team leading forty-seventh goal of the season to complete the comeback and give the Jets the 4-3 lead.
The Jets and Comrie held on to the one-goal lead through the final ten minutes of regulation to cap off the thrilling victory versus the Kraken.
This win was a great way to finish the season for the Jets. They were able to score three unanswered in the third to win and finish the regular season by sweeping their homestand and they finished with a four-game winning streak.
