As the 2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs dwindle down to the final four, the Winnipeg Jets continue to build their organizational roster for the upcoming 2022-2023 regular season.
Last night news broke that the Kevin Cheveldayoff and the Jets front office made their sixth signing for the upcoming season.
All five prior signings up to this point, including this one, have all been entry-level deals, but this signing is the first defenseman the Jets have put pen to paper with on a deal.
The Winnipeg Jets have reportedly signed Tyrel Bauer to an entry-level contract
Bauer is part of the four-player Jets draft class from the 2020 NHL Entry Draft. The Jets drafted the six-foot-three-inch defenseman in the sixth round (164th overall) of that draft.
The twenty-year-old is a highly rated prospect for the Jets and was ultimately invited to the Jets minicamp, with the Jets’ other highly rated prospects and younger players who were under contract on a tryout basis, leading up to this past 2021-2022 season.
After impressing in minicamp, the Jets then extended Bauer’s invitation to their main camp but after practicing with the Jets for a few days he was sent back to juniors. Although he had a short stint with the Jets’ main roster at camp, Bauer’s performances did not go unnoticed and he received some great reviews.
Bauer then returned to the WHL for his fourth season full season with the Seattle Thunderbirds. In his second season as team captain, Bauer put up great numbers. The defensive defenseman had five goals, five assists, and a plus-15 plus/minus in 32 regular season games.
Around the mid-point of this season, Bauer did miss a good chunk of the season due to an MCL injury but has recovered since. He then returned to help Seattle clinch a playoff spot and now the Thunderbirds have advanced through the first two rounds of the playoffs.
Tonight is game seven of Bauer’s and the Thunderbirds’ Western Conference Final playoff series against the Kamloops Blazers.
