The Winnipeg Jets Should Re-Sign Evgeny Svechnikov
Shortly before training camp began for the 2021-2022 season, the Winnipeg Jets made an interesting deal as they signed former first-round pick, Evgeny Svechnikov to a one-year AHL contract with the Manitoba Moose.
This was a low-risk, high-reward move from Kevin Cheveldayoff and the Jets front office. After Svechnikov signed that one-year deal with the Manitoba Moose, he was invited to Jets’ training camp on a Professional Tryout Offer.
Svechnikov then excelled during training camp, was one of the Jets’ top performers during the preseason, and was subsequently signed a one-year deal with the Jets worth an average annual value of $750,000.
The twenty-five-year-old then appeared in 72 regular season games for the Jets and had 7 goals, 12 assists, and a minus-four rating. He also played in all situations and in a number of different line combinations.
The Jets did not re-sign Svechnikov after last season ended and he became an unrestricted free agent for the second straight offseason.
Evgeny Svechnikov would be a great depth signing for the Winnipeg Jets for the upcoming season
With Paul Stastny leaving the Jets in free agency a couple of days ago, the Jets have some vacant offensive roles on their roster. They also only have six regular wingers on their depth chart.
Svechnikov can add some depth to the Jets’ bottom-six forwards and the Jets also have the salary cap room to sign him. According to CapFriendly, the Jets have a projected cap space of $6,279,643. We could see Svechnikov’s next contract anywhere from $800,000 to $1,000,000.
The winger showed his worth last season and could again provide the Jets with some much-needed depth without putting the Jets in a salary cap crunch.
