Yesterday it was announced that another one of the Winnipeg Jets’ unrestricted free agent forwards has left the club in free agency and signed elsewhere.

That player is Evgeny Svechnikov and he became an unrestricted free agent after the Jets did not extend the one-year contract worth $750,000 that he signed after the 2021 preseason.

Svechnikov had an interesting path to playing for the Jets last season. Last offseason, the Manitoba Moose signed the former first-round draft pick to an AHL contract. He was then invited to the Winnipeg Jets training camp on a PTO and had an outstanding camp and preseason.

The Jets then signed the left winger to a contract and he went on to appear in 72 regular season games and scored seven goals and added 12 assists, but had a minus-four plus/minus.

The San Jose Sharks announced yesterday afternoon that they signed Svechnikov to a one-year contract, but did not disclose the terms of this deal.

Cap Friendly reports that the twenty-five-year-old’s contract is exactly the same as his last one with the Jets. It again carries an average annual value of $750,000.

Svechinkov exceeded many expectations last season. He was a low-risk, late summer signing and became a mainstay in the Jets’ lineup. He now joins the Sharks who have the likes of Logan Couture, Tomas Hertl, Timo Meier, and Nick Bonino in their forward group.

It will be interesting to see how Kevin Cheveldayoff and the Jets’ management team approach the final month of the offseason and how they add to the Jets roster, considering they have over $5,000,000 in cap space available.
