Blake Wheeler – “Hypnotize” by the Notorious B.I.G.

Initial reaction: Say whaaaaaaat?

Assumed reason for selection: This one had me baffled until Murat Ates of the Athletic did a feature on Blake that included several anecdotes of his prowess as a freestyle rapper. Wheeler has taken some bad beats recently, so it is nice to ‘hear’ he has some good ones.

Song Choice Rating: 3 ½ Stars

Preferred choice: This might be too soon, but the obvious choice here is “I’m Your Captain (Closer to Home)” by Grand Funk Railroad. Just imagine the message that would send to Jets fans, leadership, and management. I think it would be a great “stickin’ it to you” salvo and fits with Blake’s sense of humor.

Mix-tape, CD, or streaming guy: I’m certain Wheeler has his own Spotify playlist. Leaders stay up with the trends.

Will we hear this song frequently this year? Wheeler has transitioned from playmaker to glue guy this year, so I don’t envision a bevy of goals, but he still has great vision. He has also fit in nicely with Dubois and Perfetti. That line has been the most consistent to start the year and has been a great driver of play.
