The Winnipeg Jets beat the Seattle Kraken 3-2 in overtime in a dramatic game. Here are three talking points from the Jets’ win

The Winnipeg Jets played the second game of a back-to-back last night as they went to the Climate Pledge Arena to take on the Seattle Kraken.

Both of these teams were looking to bounce back after coming off winning streaks. The Jets had their three-game winning streak and seven-game point streak snapped the night before as they lost 3-2 to the Calgary Flames.

The Kraken also had their five-game winning streak broken, in their last contest, on Friday night in a 1-0 regulation loss to the Minnesota Wild.

The Jets only made two lineup changes for this game as Mikey Eyssimont made his season debut and replaced Jansen Harkins, and David Rittich got the start in goal for Connor Hellebuyck who played the night before.

Here are three talking points from Winnipeg’s 3-2 overtime over Seattle:

3. A Wild Ride

This game was a close affair with neither team dominating the game. The shots were 30 to 21 in favor of the Jets.

The Jets had seven powerplays and their struggles with the man advantage continued, but both of the Jets’ regulation goals came on the man advantage.

Seattle opened the scoring in the first courtesy of Jordan Eberle and Mark Scheifele tied the game in the second. Brandon Tanev then gave the Kraken the lead near the midway point in the third and the Jets could not find an equalizer.

Finally, on the powerplay with five seconds left, Blake Wheeler scored to tie the game and force the game into overtime.

In overtime, Scheifele finished the comeback on a great two-on-one with Josh Morrissey to seal both points for the Jets.

2. Blake Wheeler Scores His 300th Career Goal at a Crucial Time

Wheeler’s 300th NHL career goal could not have come at a more crucial time for his team. With the Jets on the man advantage in the final minute of regulation, they pulled Rittich.

The former Jets captain went to the front of the net and provided a screen as the Jets threw everything they had at the Kraken’s net in an effort to tie the game.

The Jets worked the puck to Kyle Connor, who was on the top of the faceoff circle to the right of Seattle’s net, and Connor ripped a one-timer.

The shot found its way through a sea of bodies and hit the Kraken’s netminder and created a loose rebound.

Wheeler was the first one to the rebound and slotted the puck home to tie the game, send it into overtime, and seal a point for the Jets.

The thirty-six-year-old Wheeler is only one of 214 players in the history of the NHL to score 300 goals and the forward did it in 1,060 games.

1. Mark Scheifele Scores the Game Winner

This overtime winner was an outstanding play from Mark Scheifele. Scheifele started the play in the defensive zone and finished the play.

The Kraken had the puck in the Jets’ defensive zone, and the Seattle player tried taking Josh Morrissey one-on-one.

As Morrissey was stepping up, Scheifele came in from behind and poked the puck away, and took control going up ice. At the same time, Morrissey got up ice as quick as possible.

Scheifele then delivered a pass to the streaking Morrissey and created a two-on-one. Morrissey then held onto the puck as he entered the offensive zone, which forced Seattle’s defenseman to step up.

As soon as the Kraken’s defenseman turned to face Morrissey, the Jets’ number 44 made a pass to Scheifele who one-touched the puck past the sliding Kraken netminder and into the open net.

From start to finish this was an outstanding goal. Scheifele made a terrific play in the defensive zone and he scored on a textbook two-on-one with Morrissey.

So far this season, overtime has been a strong suit for the Winnipeg Jets. The Jets have had five games that have required overtime and they have won four of them.
