Sami Vatanen

Normally, I would be very reluctant to sign a 29-year-old defenseman with significant injury issues over the past five seasons. However, these are not normal times.

When the right-shooting Sami Vatanen has been healthy he has been an effective puck moving defenseman, who would fit nicely on the Jets second or third pairing.

Vantanen does not solve the Jets problem of finding a second pairing left shooting defenseman, but he does provide quality veteran depth that perhaps pushes some of the other Jets defenseman such as Nathan Beaulieu and Sami Niku further down the depth chart where they may be more suited.

It is highly unlikely that Vatanen receives any contract offers near his previous salary of $4.8 million per season. Perhaps Kevin Cheveldayoff could offer him a one year “prove it” type contract of somewhere closer to $3 million per season.
