The Winnipeg Jets went into Ottawa last night for the start of a two-game mini-series between the Jets and Senators.

Winnipeg came into last night’s game in the midst of a five-game road trip. Winnipeg won their first two games during this trip in Montreal, which extended Winnipeg’s winning streak to three games.

Ottawa was looking to turn around a streak of their own last night. Going into the game, the Senators were on a four-game losing streak and they had not won on home-ice in their past four games at the Canadian Tire Centre.

The Winnipeg Jets got their win streak snapped, losing 4-2 to the Ottawa Senators

The Jets started the game extremely well. Kyle Connor gave the Jets a 1-0 lead exactly five minutes into the game with a beautiful one-timer on the powerplay.

Then just over three minutes later, Nikolaj Ehlers extended the Jets lead to two with a shot off the rush to beat Anton Forsberg.

All was seeming to go well for the Jets, in the early stages, they were dominating the game and they looked comfortable with a two-goal lead.

Then the momentum switched. With around 11:30 left in the first period, Logan Stanley fought Josh Brown, and then a minute and a half later, Neal Pionk took a tripping penalty.

Brady Tkachuk capitalized on the powerplay for the Senators to cut the Jets lead in half. Then at the end of the period, Connor Brown beat Connor Hellebuyck with a long shot from the top of the zone to tie the game at two after one.

The teams traded chances in the second period, but no one could find the back of the net. The Jets were given some great opportunities to score the go-ahead goal with three power plays in the second, but unfortunately, they could not beat Forsberg.

During the Jets’ second powerplay of the period, Forsberg made an outstanding kick save to deny Paul Stastny of a great scoring opportunity on the back door.

Ottawa also had some great odd-man chances in the middle frame, but they failed to score on these chances.

The third period started much like the second ended, but the Senators had the better of the play. Ottawa scored the eventual game winning goal at around the halfway mark of the third.

The Senators dumped the back in from center ice onto Hellebuyck’s net. The puck bounced onto Hellebuyck and he was forced to go down and push the puck back into the slot. Unfortunately for Winnipeg, Evegenii Dadonov was the first player to the loose puck and made a move to his backhand to beat Hellebuyck.

Then on a four-on-four in the late stages of the game, Tkachuk added his second goal of the night on a breakaway to give the Senators a 4-2 lead.

The Senators held on in the dying stages of the game to take all two points from the game and beat the Jets 4-2.

Last night was a tough game for the Jets and something we have not seen often from them. They had a two-goal lead early and then allowed four answered goals to a team that has been struggling all year.

Fortunately for Winnipeg, they will get another shot at the Senators when these sides conclude their two-game series on Wednesday night.
