The Winnipeg Jets concluded their two-game series in Ottawa against the Senators yesterday looking to earn a victory and split the series.

Winnipeg did not have their best effort in game one of this set on Monday night. The Jets took an early two-goal lead, but then allowed four unanswered to the Senators and lost the contest 4-2.

Paul Maurice and the Jets coaching staff decided to go with the same lineup as Monday in yesterday’s game. The lone change the Jets made was in net. Laurent Brossoit was given the start after Connor Hellebuyck started the past seven games for Winnipeg.

This decision paid off for the Jets as they were able to get the victory against Ottawa and leave the Canadian Tire Centre with two of a possible four points from the two-game set.

Here are three talking points from yesterday’s Jets win:

3. Jets are Outstanding after a Loss

The Winnipeg Jets have been a team that has responded extremely well when things have their way this season. They have not had any long losing streaks and have always found a way to bounce back after a loss.

After losing on Monday to the last-placed team in the division, you had a feeling the Jets were going to come out strong yesterday and have a much-improved performance.

The Jets did exactly that and picked up the win for the efforts. That win improved the Jets record to 14-1-2 after coming off of a loss in the game before.

This record is eye-opening and absolutely outstanding. This is one of the key reasons the Jets are one of the top teams in the North Division and why there is such a big gap between them and the teams that are out of playoff position.

2. Laurent Brossoit Steps In and Plays Extremely Well

Before last night, the last time Laurent Brossoit started a game for the Winnipeg Jets was back on March 27 against the Calgary Flames.

Starts have been few and far between for Brossoit, but he has played well for the Jets when called upon this season. Last night was no different for the Jets number two netminder.

Brossoit was solid yesterday for the Jets. The Senators fired 29 shots his way and he stopped 27 of them including stopping six of seven faced while the Jets were shorthanded.

That win improved Brossoit’s record to 6-3-0. Brossoit has appeared in 10 games for the Jets this season, starting in nine of them. The twenty-eight-year-old carries a 2.57 goals against average, a .916 save percentage, and one shutout throughout this year.

1. Jets Third Period Special Teams is the Difference

The Jets started the third period yesterday tied at one but were granted a great opportunity at the start of the final frame when Josh Norris was called for a tripping penalty.

In the second half of the power play, the Jets worked the puck around to Mathieu Perreault on the half wall in the offensive zone.

Perreault faked a pass back to Nikolaj Ehlers, who was on the point, and this opened a lane for him to the net. Perreault then walked it in and fired a shot over Matt Murray’s glove and into the back of the net to give the Jets a 2-1 lead.

Around the halfway point of the final frame, the Jets penalty kill was called into action when Andrew Copp was called for a penalty.

With just under a minute left in the penalty kill, the Jets were able to clear their defensive zone as the puck bounced out towards the Senators’ zone.

Ottawa’s defenseman was slow to turn around to retrieve the puck and Trevor Lewis took his opportunity. He skated full speed down the ice for the loose puck, retrieved it, and took it towards the net on a semi-breakaway.

Lewis then moved the puck from his backhand to his forehand and ripped a shot over Murray’s glove to extend the Jets lead to two.

Special teams propelled Winnipeg to victory in the third period of yesterday’s game and made the difference in them winning the game.
