The Winnipeg Jets started a three-game road trip last night with a matchup against the Montreal Canadiens.
Winnipeg was looking to turn their fortunes around as they were bringing a five-game losing streak into yesterday’s contest and were facing off against a Canadiens team that was looking to extend their lead in fourth place in the division.
The Jets showed some life early in the game and ultimately had a 3-1 with less than half the game remaining, but the Canadiens crawled their way back in.
The Montreal Canadiens scored four straight goals en route to a 5-3 victory over the Winnipeg Jets
Montreal was able to score two goals in the second half of the second period to tie the game at three for the start of the third.
The teams traded chances in the third and then Winnipeg was granted a golden opportunity when the Canadiens took a too many men on the ice penalty. Unfortunately for the Jets, they were unable to capitalize on their opportunity and Paul Stastny took a high sticking penalty towards the end of the man advantage.
Montreal was able to take a 4-3 courtesy of a Nick Suzuki power play goal. Special teams made the difference in this game as the Canadiens went two for three on their power plays, while the Jets went zero for two on theirs.
With that loss, the Jets currently have the longest losing streak in the NHL at six games. Winnipeg now only has a four-point lead for third place in the North over Montreal, but the Canadiens have a game in hand on Winnipeg.
The Jets will have the weekend off before returning to action on Monday night in Ottawa against the Senators. Ottawa has played well as of late and have won their last two games. The Senators will be taking on the Canadiens tonight in Montreal.
