Winnipeg Jets Resign Pending Free Agent Goaltender
The Winnipeg Jets front office has been extremely active over the past couple of days. They have acquired Brenden Dillon and Nate Schmidt through trades for draft picks and also brought back Paul Stastny to Winnipeg on a one-year deal.
Although much of the focus on the Jets this offseason is their need to add depth on defense, there is an area the Jets are a little thin in.
Before yesterday, Connor Hellebuyck was the only goaltender on Winnipeg’s NHL roster. Both of the Jets’ backup goaltenders from last year, Laurent Brossoit and Eric Comrie, are pending free agents.
The Winnipeg Jets have resigned Eric Comrie to a one-year contract
Comrie returns to Winnipeg after having a roller coaster of a campaign during the 2021 season. He started the season with the Jets and then was claimed off waivers by the New Jersey Devils. Then later in the season, the Devils placed Comrie on waivers and the Jets claimed him.
The twenty-six-year-old did appear in one NHL game during last season when he was with the Devils. He made 30 saves on 33 shots against and picked up the win against the Buffalo Sabres.
Comrie also played in four games in the AHL with the Manitoba Moose and played outstanding. In those four games, he posted a 3-0-1 record with a 1.23 goals against average and a .947 save percentage.
Comrie’s new one-year deal that keeps him with the Jets carries an average annual value of $750,000.
Since there has been no news of Brossoit resigning, as of now, it looks like Comrie is set to be the backup for the Jets in the upcoming 2021-2022 season. With the offseason in full swing, and then training camp there is still no telling of what may happen, but Comrie is an early favorite for the backup job.
