During the past couple of weeks, Kevin Cheveldayoff and the Winnipeg Jets front office have already secured three players to entry-level contracts for next season as they look to the future of the franchise.

During last night’s 4-0 win over the Philadelphia Flyers, the Jets signed a highly rated prospect to an entry-level deal.

The player they signed is Chaz Lucius, an eighteen-year-old forward, who the Jets drafted eighteenth overall in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft.

The Winnipeg Jets have officially signed Chaz Lucius

Before entering the draft, Lucius played for the United States National Development Program where he was known for his elite shot and was rated as one of the best goal scorers in the 2021 draft class.

After the Jets selected him with their first-round draft choice, Lucius played for the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers this past season. In 24 games at the collegiate level, he had nine goals and ten assists, while amassing 23 penalty minutes and a +5 plus/minus.

Lucius also was a member of the United States World Junior team for the 2022 World Junior Championship, but only played in one game before the tournament was canceled. There is a strong chance we may see him back on team U.S.A. when the tournament gets made up this upcoming summer.

According to Cap Friendly, Lucius’ first pro contract will begin for the 2022-2023 season, is for three seasons, and carries an average annual value of $1,325,000 at the NHL level and $80,000 at the minor league level.

Lucius definitely has the ability to challenge for a roster spot for the 2022-2023 regular season and it will be interesting to see how he adapts to the professional game.
