Germans have great words for “phenomena”—words that sound like onomatopoeia, are virtually impossible to pronounce, and somehow capture a feeling the English language can’t. Don’t believe me? Here are a few of my favorites:
1. “Backpfeifengesicht” — literally, “a face that’s asking for a slap.”
Use in a sentence (possibly libellous): “The Tkachuk brothers both have backpfeifengesicht.”
2. “Kummerspeck” — “grief bacon”; weight gained from emotional eating.
Use in a sentence: “I lament my kummerspeck resulting from the Winnipeg Jets’ 2025–26 season.”
3. “Torschlusspanik” — “door-closing panic”; the fear of missed opportunities as time feels like it’s running out.
Use in a sentence: “I have torschlusspanik over the Winnipeg Jets.”
You get it. My current favourite German word is more widely known: schadenfreude—the pleasure in someone else’s misfortune.
Why? On March 6, 2026, the Winnipeg Jets traded Logan Stanley and Luke Schenn to the Buffalo Sabres.
I wrote here about why Logan Stanley needed to go. I didn’t bother writing a similar article about Luke Schenn because, quite honestly, I didn’t think there was much of a market for his services.
It has been two games (the smallest of sample sizes), but seeing the reaction from Buffalo Sabres fans brought out a side of me I hoped had been retired with age.
To be clear, I believe both Logan Stanley and Luke Schenn to be hard-working, upstanding denizens of the NHL. The issue is that neither is particularly good at playing hockey.
Buffalo fans—by all accounts a knowledgeable bunch—immediately picked up on this:
How much are you looking forward to watching the newcomer pair of Logan Stanley and Luke Schenn from #GoJetsGo possibly play together again on the #Sabres third defensive pair? #Sabrehood

I'll save you the time - 78 percent voted "Never want to see again"
Luke Schenn & Logan Stanley, welcome to Buffalo baby!!! https://t.co/wrWDcVRSJK

These game scores are not great, and I'm afraid, very common.
I’m pretty ok on never seeing Logan Stanley again.

Get Logan Stanley off the freakin' ice#LetsGoBuffalo #sabrehood

My timeline is littered with similar posts—most of them not appropriate for this venue—excoriating Stanley and Schenn. My favorite:
Watching a Logan Stanley shift after a Dahlin shift is like a waiter replacing your filet mignon with a plate of jagged rocks

Sabres fans, I apologize—not for the trade (that was great), but for the schadenfreude I’m feeling, which is a petty and immature reaction. Take solace in the fact that you’re playoff-bound and have a young, dynamic team. And please excuse Winnipeg Jets fans for deriving pleasure wherever we can.
