Winnipeg Jets Preseason Opener: Brossoit Gets His First Bross-Shot

The Winnipeg Jets are finally back to playing real hockey. It’s not meaningful hockey, but it’ll be fun nevertheless.

The Winnipeg Jets are back! Well, you know, not really. But after a season ended the way theirs did, isn’t it just good to see them back on the ice against a real opponent?

That is, if you consider the Minnesota Wild a real opponent. SHOTS FIRED. No, I’m only kidding. Those boys are pretty tough, despite their early exit at the hands of our boys.

I doubt things will get chippy in the first game of their preseason, but hey, the Wild probably are looking to show they can beat the Jets. Step right up and beat the Jets!

My eyes will be on the kids, when I take a look at this game. I’m excited to see which of them get some playing time from Paul Maurice, and who does what with it.

But since I don’t know that, I have to go with the information I have. That information, courtesy of Jamie Thomas, is that Laurent Brossoit will be between the pipes this season. Brossoit gets his first Brosshot.

Which only works if you have a very bad French accent, which, you know, is pretty plausible. It’s a bad joke even if it does rhyme. But I stuck with it, and now you’re stuck with me, too.

Regardless, Brossoit, 25, will get his first crack at being the backup. I’m assuming he wins the job, but the Jets might want to see what Eric Comrie can do.  I know I’m intrigued at the potential he has. Although it seems like backup potential, that’s all Winnipeg needs right now.

Brossoit, however, also has me cautiously optimistic. If you look at his numbers, which you should not, he looks like a terrible option to trust. The Jets must see something, however, if they’re willing to role the dice.

A veteran backup would make me feel safer, but you know Winnipeg will go get one if the situation calls for it. The chance of winning the Cup is too high to risk on bad goaltenders.

But if the Jets really like Brossoit, I do too. Having an A+ name helps, certainly, but Winnipeg went out and got him because they think he can do the job.

And with Hellebuyck in there, the Jets don’t really need a backup to split the workload. They just need them to play capably for a couple games a month. And they must think he’ll be good at it.

Look, it’s not like the Oilers have had much success with goaltenders. Cam Talbot was the best backup in the NHL for a spell, and last year had a horrendous year. I’m rooting for him, and Brossoit.

Let’s find out what he looks like tonight, huh? I’ll be good to have Winnipeg Jets hockey back.
