The Winnipeg Jets completely fell apart, and it’s somewhat difficult to understand why, but some of the obvious issues aren’t really all that deep.

The Winnipeg Jets second-half collapse needs to be addressed. I assume it will be the biggest talking point over the summer, unless somehow they come together and make a strong Stanley Cup push.

The way I see it, there are a few obvious things that they can’t really worry about. Patrik Laine‘s development was stunted, but there’s not much more the Jets can do but run him out there and hope for the best.

If there’s a coaching change, maybe Laine stands to benefit the most. For what it’s worth, I think there’s basically zero chance Paul Maurice gets fired this offseason. I would assume they’ll let the injuries be the excuse and give him more time.

If he can’t get the team off to a better start next season, he’ll immediately be on the hot seat. The Jets can’t afford to waste more time. But I would imagine he won’t get canned this year.

As for Connor Hellebuyck, he’s looked much better of late. He likely won’t repeat his record-setting season, but I’m confident he’ll be just fine. Maybe average, maybe slightly above. But they can’t move him and they shouldn’t just bench him.

Josh Morrissey‘s injury really set the team back. The defense has been poor. They’ve been blowing leads like they want to have a full offseason to work on their putting game.

I have to imagine acquiring a solid defenseman will be high on their list this offseason. Dustin Byfuglien‘s injuries and Morrissey’s prolonged absence have shown the Jets they need more depth. With Tyler Myers an impending unrestricted free agent, they’ll have to plug a couple hole on the blueline.

Cap space will always be an issue, but the Jets also need to make sure they find a real second line center. Kyle Connor‘s RFA status will add to that. Is Kevin Hayes the answer? He’s probably the best option, unless the team tries to make a run at Matt Duchene.

Kevin Cheveldayoff built a good roster. Now he has to tweak it. Another in-season trade is just not going to get it done. They can’t keep relying on Bryan Little to be the guy. They need to push him down the depth chart to begin with. I could even see a buyout in the cards.

The Jets need depth players, too. They should retain Brandon Tanev (UFA), and maybe Nathan Beaulieu (RFA). But there’s something that needs to be done, just nothing major. It’s not time to blow it up.

I would be surprised if there was a second round of playoffs for the Jets, who are basically playing for home ice against the Blues at this point. I’m not already shifting my focus to the offseason, but I can’t hide that my thoughts are on an important one for the Winnipeg Jets.
