The Winnipeg Jets have just announced their 2021 training camp roster. Here are three takeaways from the roster announcement.

Monday is a big day for the Winnipeg Jets. For the first time since they were eliminated by the Calgary Flames in the 2020 Stanley Cup Qualifiers, they will be back on the ice.

January 3rd will kick off training camp for all of the NHL franchises who made last year’s playoffs, but the Jets are scheduled to start practice on January 4th. Each team is allowed to invite 36 skaters to participate in training camp.

The Jets training camp roster features five goaltenders, 15 defensemen,19 forwards, and three injured players. The full roster can be found here and in the tweet below:

Here are three takeaways from the initial roster:

3. Trevor Lewis will Attend on a Professional Tryout

The Jets invited three players to camp on a Professional Tryout (“PTO”). Those players include Cole Kheler, Jimmy Oligny, and Trevor Lewis.

The Jets inviting Lewis on a PTO has caught the attention of many people. The two-time Stanley Cup Champion has been a mainstay with the Los Angeles Kings since the 2010-2011 season but is now currently a free agent.

Lewis had a rough 2019-2020 campaign where he only had six goals, six assists, and a -7 plus/minus in 56 games. It will be extremely interesting to see if Lewis can perform well on his PTO and earn a contract with the Jets.

2. Defensive Depth

One thing is for certain when looking at this roster, the Jets have a plethora of talent on defense. There will be an immense amount of competition for the starting six spots on opening night and the rest of the roster spots on the backend.

The Jets invited some of their top prospects to camp including Dylan Samberg, Declan Chisholm, Logan Stanley, Luke Green, and Johnathan Kovacevic. Then you add in the likes of Sami Niku, Luca Sbisa, and Nelson Nogier who all have NHL experience and are also competing for spots. It looks like there will be some great competition and the Jets will have some interesting roster decisions to make at the end of camp.

1. Netminder Depth Chart Looks Set

The Jets invited five goalies to camp including Connor Hellebuyck, Mikhail Berdin, Laurent Brossoit, Eric Comrie, and Cole Kehler. Kehler will be attending camp on a PTO.

It is almost certain that reigning Vezina Trophy winner, Connor Hellebuyck, will be the Jets starting goalie come opening night, but there will be competition for the backup spot.

Berdin, Brossoit, and Comrie will all be in contention for the backup role and it will be interesting to take note of who makes the roster and who is named to the Jets taxi-squad at the end of camp.
